When Walter Smith names his Futures squad this week, it will be a error of judgement of Berti Vogts proportions if Kris Boyd is not included.
Seven goals in his last four games is international standard on its own, but to have a tally of fourteen before the end of November is unprecendented outwith the Old Firm. Only the likes of Larsson and Negri have scored more by this stage.
But before we get too carried away, Boyd is no Larsson or Negri. He is the most instinctive finisher Kilmarnock have had in the modern era, as his record in overhauling Paul Wright's record has proved. Don't forget, Wright was a big money signing reaching the peak of his career when Killie snapped him up wheras Boyd made his debut at 16. For Boyd to have broken Wright's record having played twenty games less, is a measure of his undoubted talent. Willie Watters is the only other natural predator Killie have had in the last twenty years, and he wouldn't have scored so many in this Kilmarnock side, even with permanent full time training.
There is the joy of following Killie- you get to compare players with Willie Watters and Henrik Larsson with a straight face.
Not only must Boyd be given a Scotland jersey, he must surely be the SPL Player of the Month for November. Five goals in three games means he is he only contender, and will add him to another very elite, very short, Killie shortlist.
